Moisturising care

Korean moisturisers range from light gel creams for oily skin to rich creams with ceramides for a stressed skin barrier. They close the routine, keep the moisture from toner and serum in the skin and calm with centella, heartleaf or panthenol. Brands such as Beauty of Joseon, SKIN1004, Dr. Althea and Medicube are sorted here by skin type.

Guide: Moisturising care

Which cream suits which skin?

  • Oily and combination skin: gel creams with a water or gel texture, for example with centella or heartleaf, that absorb quickly and do not shine.
  • Dry skin: rich creams with ceramides, squalane and rice bran, for example the Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream.
  • Sensitive skin: fragrance-free formulas with panthenol, madecassoside or beta-glucan.
  • Mature skin: creams with peptides, collagen or ginseng for a plumper-looking complexion.

Barrier cream, sleeping mask, gel cream: the formats

A barrier cream contains skin-barrier-like lipids such as ceramides and cholesterol and is used for tight, irritated skin. A sleeping mask is a rich night treatment that works overnight and is washed off in the morning. Gel creams are the lightest option and also work under sunscreen and make-up.

How to use

The cream is the last skincare step in the evening and, in the morning, the last before sunscreen. A pea-sized amount is usually enough; for very dry skin, a thin layer of petroleum jelly or balm on top (slugging) can hold the moisture in further.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a cream if my skin is oily?

Yes, but a light one: gel creams give the skin moisture without adding oil. When moisture is missing, the skin often produces even more sebum.

What is a barrier cream?

A cream with ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol in a skin-like ratio. It supports the skin barrier when the skin feels tight or red and after acids or retinol.

Can I use my night cream in the morning too?

Light creams, yes. Rich night creams and sleeping masks are usually too heavy under sunscreen during the day.
