Serums & Essences

Korean serums, ampoules and essences deliver active ingredients in higher concentrations than toners or creams. Essences are light and hydrating, serums target one need such as pores, dark spots or the skin barrier, and ampoules are even more concentrated. Here you will find classics such as COSRX Snail Mucin, the SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule and PDRN serums from Anua and Medicube.

Guide: Serums & Essences

Serum, essence or ampoule?

The terms mainly describe concentration and texture. An essence is watery and applied generously after the toner. A serum is slightly denser and solves one specific concern. An ampoule is the most concentrated form and is used as a course or sparingly. In a Korean routine they follow the toner, from the thinnest to the richest product.

Serums by active ingredient

  • PDRN: polynucleotides from salmon DNA or plant sources, Korea's trending ingredient for a smoother, rested complexion.
  • Snail mucin: snail secretion filtrate for hydration and a supple feel.
  • Niacinamide: vitamin B3 for pores, glow and a more even skin tone.
  • Centella asiatica: calms irritated, redness-prone skin.
  • Peptides and collagen: for mature skin and a firmer-looking surface.

How to combine serums

More than two serums per routine are rarely necessary. Hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid or snail mucin combine with almost anything. Acids (BHA, AHA) and retinol belong in the evening routine, vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen. If you are new to actives, introduce one serum at a time and watch your skin for a few days.

Frequently asked questions

How many serums can I use at once?

One or two per routine is enough. Apply the thinner one first and wait briefly until it has absorbed.

Serum before or after cream?

Always before the cream. The serum absorbs into the skin, the cream seals the routine and locks in moisture.

What does ampoule mean in Korean skincare?

An ampoule is a particularly concentrated serum. It is used sparingly, often as a course or as a boost for specific needs.
