Korean exfoliants work mostly chemically and gently: BHA (salicylic acid) dissolves sebum in the pores, AHA smooths the surface, PHA is the mildest option for sensitive skin. You will find hardly any coarse scrubs here, but toners, pads and serums with low-dose acids for regular use.
BHA (salicylic acid): oil-soluble, penetrates into the pore. For oily skin, blackheads and blemish-prone skin. Not for children under three years.
AHA (glycolic, lactic acid): water-soluble, smooths the surface and gives glow. For normal to dry skin, use in the evening.
PHA (gluconolactone, lactobionic acid): larger molecules, the mildest effect. For sensitive skin and beginners.
Enzymes (papain, bromelain): loosen dead skin flakes without acids.
How often to exfoliate
Two to three times a week is enough for most skin types; sensitive skin starts with once. Acids belong in the evening routine, and sunscreen is a must the next morning. Retinol and acids are better spread over different evenings (skin cycling).
Korean skincare likes to combine exfoliation with soothing ingredients such as centella so that the skin barrier stays stable.
Frequently asked questions
How often can I use a chemical exfoliant?
Two to three times a week in the evening, less often for sensitive skin. Do not forget sunscreen during the day.
Can I combine BHA and retinol?
Better on different evenings. Both together slightly irritate the skin; alternating over the week is better tolerated.
What is the difference between exfoliating pads and exfoliating toner?
Pads contain the same acid toner but can be applied more precisely and have a slight mechanical effect thanks to the pad structure.
