Hardly any product has made K-Beauty as well known in Europe as sunscreen. The reason is simple: Korean formulas feel like a light moisturiser on the skin, leave no white cast and still protect very highly. This guide compares the most popular formulas in our range by texture, filters, finish and skin type. It is based on the ingredient lists, the manufacturers' information and our own use; we have not carried out a laboratory test of the protection, and the SPF figures come from the manufacturers.
Why are Korean sunscreens so light?
The difference lies in the UV filters. Korean manufacturers rely on modern organic filters such as Uvinul A Plus (Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate), Tinosorb S (Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine) and Uvinul T 150 (Ethylhexyl Triazone). These filters are photostable, protect broadly against UVA and UVB and can be worked into watery, gel-like textures. Add skincare ingredients such as rice extract, centella, hyaluronic acid or niacinamide, and the sunscreen partly replaces the moisturising step.
What do SPF and PA++++ mean?
SPF (sun protection factor) describes protection against UVB radiation, which causes sunburn. SPF 50+ means that, with the correct amount applied, the skin is protected about 50 times longer than unprotected skin. PA is the Asian scale for UVA protection, which matters for skin ageing and dark spots; PA++++ is the highest grade. In the EU, UVA protection must be at least one third of the SPF, recognisable by the UVA logo in a circle. All sunscreens at Kunnie comply with the EU Cosmetics Regulation.

Which sunscreen for which skin type?
Dry skin
Creamy formulas with rice extract, ceramides or vitamin E that bring hydration with them. The Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics is the classic for this; underneath it, a light toner is often enough in the morning.
Oily and combination skin
Watery, gel textures with a matte or natural finish that do not shine and do not weigh down pores: Aqua-Fresh or the Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum. Both work well under make-up.
Sensitive skin
Formulas with centella, without fragrance and alcohol, for example the Air-Fit Suncream Light. If you react to organic filters, go for mineral or hybrid filters with zinc oxide; modern formulas offset the white cast with a light tint.
Mature skin and dark spots
Here what counts above all is consistent, high UVA protection (PA++++), combined with a niacinamide or vitamin C serum underneath. The texture is a matter of taste.
How much sunscreen do you need?
The amount used in studies is 2 milligrams per square centimetre of skin. For the face that corresponds to about 1.2 to 1.5 grams, roughly two finger-lengths of cream or a heaped teaspoon. Most people apply considerably less and then achieve only a fraction of the stated protection. Spread evenly, do not forget ears, neck and eyelids, and let it absorb for a few minutes before applying make-up.
How often do you need to reapply?
In the sun, when sweating or after contact with water, every two hours. In the office without direct sun, the protection lasts longer but decreases over the day. For reapplying over make-up, sun sticks or sunscreen sprays are suitable; a sheet mask or a mist additionally refreshes the skin. Sunscreen is one building block: shade, clothing and a hat remain important, especially at midday.
What does "water-resistant" mean and how important is it?
According to the EU recommendation, "water-resistant" means that after two 20-minute periods in the water at least half of the protection remains; "very water-resistant" after four 20-minute periods. For everyday life in the office this is unimportant; for the beach, sport and sweating it is decisive. Most light Korean formulas are not declared water-resistant; for a day at the beach, sun sticks or explicitly water-resistant sunscreens are better suited, and reapplying after towelling off remains a must.
Combining sunscreen and make-up
Sunscreen goes under make-up and needs a few minutes to form an even film. Tinted sunscreens replace foundation where light coverage is enough; powder or foundation with SPF complement the protection but do not replace it, because nobody applies enough powder for the stated factor. For reapplying over make-up, sun sticks and sunscreen mists are the most practical solution: press the stick on gently instead of rubbing, spray the mist from about 15 centimetres away and press in lightly with your hands.
Chemical or mineral: which is better?
Both types of filter protect when used correctly. Organic ("chemical") filters convert UV radiation into heat; mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) scatter and absorb it. Organic filters make the light Korean textures possible; mineral filters are often the first choice for very sensitive skin and for children, but can leave a white cast. Hybrids combine both. The choice depends on tolerance and wear, not on the quality of protection.
Sunscreen in the routine: where does it go?
Always as the last skincare step in the morning, after moisturiser and before make-up. Actives such as vitamin C or niacinamide go underneath. In the evening, sunscreen is removed with a cleansing oil, because water-resistant filters do not come off with water alone. More on this in our routine guide.
