In short: Anua suits you if your skin gets irritated easily, is prone to redness and you like light, watery textures. The brand builds almost its entire range around heartleaf (Houttuynia cordata) and soothing the skin. COSRX suits you if you are looking for hydration and a plumper, smoother skin feel, with snail mucin and hyaluronic acid, or an uncomplicated gel cleanser with BHA for oily and combination skin. Both brands work largely without perfume, pay attention to pH and are suitable for beginners; in many routines they even complement each other. This comparison sets the hero products side by side (toner and essence, cleansers, creams) and gives our picks for each skin type. It is based on the ingredient lists, manufacturer information and our own use, not on laboratory measurements.
What does Anua stand for?
Anua is a Korean brand that became known for the Heartleaf 77 Soothing Toner and has since built almost everything around one idea: soothe the skin first, then nourish it. Its namesake is heartleaf (Houttuynia cordata), an extract traditionally used in Korean skincare for irritated skin prone to redness and blemishes. The number in the product name gives the extract content: 77% in the toner, 70% in the cream, 80% in the ampoule. Alongside these there are lines with rice water (hydration and glow), peach and niacinamide (pores, skin tone), a BHA toner for exfoliation and an azelaic acid serum. The textures are mostly watery to light, and according to the manufacturer most products are fragrance-free. The whole range: Anua at Kunnie.
What does COSRX stand for?
COSRX combines "Cosmetics" and "RX", the abbreviation for prescription, and thereby describes the concept: few, purposeful ingredients, pH-conscious formulas, no frills. The brand became known for the Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence, whose main ingredient is snail secretion filtrate, and for the Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser. Added to these are a snail mucin cream, moisturisers with hyaluronic acid, serums with niacinamide, vitamin C and peptides, and hydrocolloid patches for individual spots. The textures are light to gel-like, the packaging is simple. The whole range: COSRX at Kunnie.
Toner and essence: Anua Heartleaf 77 or COSRX Snail Mucin 96?
Both products come straight after cleansing and are meant to hydrate, but they do different jobs. The Anua Heartleaf 77 Soothing Toner is a watery toner with 77% heartleaf extract, panthenol, betaine and glycerin; the INCI list contains no perfume. It feels cool and light, absorbs immediately and works in several layers (7 skin method). Its strength: soothing redness without weighing oily skin down. The COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence consists of 96.3% snail secretion filtrate, complemented by sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and allantoin. The texture is slightly gel-like and stringy but also absorbs quickly. Its strength: hydration and a plumper, smoother skin feel for dry, dull or stressed skin (more on snail mucin).
| Criterion | Anua Heartleaf 77 Soothing Toner | COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence |
|---|---|---|
| Skin type | all; especially oily, combination and redness-prone skin | all; especially dry, dull and mature skin |
| Texture | watery, cooling, absorbs immediately | slightly gel-like, stringy, absorbs quickly |
| Key active | 77% Houttuynia cordata extract, panthenol | 96.3% snail secretion filtrate, sodium hyaluronate, allantoin |
| Scent | no perfume (INCI) | no perfume (INCI) |
| Size | 250 ml | 100 ml |
| Place in the routine | after cleansing, also in several layers | after the toner, before serum and cream |
Our pick: oily and redness-prone skin goes for the heartleaf toner, dry and mature skin for the snail mucin essence. If you want both, apply the toner first and the essence afterwards.
Cleansing: Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil or COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser?
Here we compare two different cleansing steps, because COSRX has no cleansing oil in our range. The Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil is the first step of double cleansing in the evening: a base of esters and plant oils (sunflower, macadamia, olive, jojoba, grape seed) with heartleaf extract that dissolves sunscreen, make-up and sebum and emulsifies into a milk with water. According to the INCI list it contains perfume, and the scent is subtle; if you want to avoid fragrance, the Anua Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Oil Mild is the lighter variant. The COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is a water-based gel cleanser with mild surfactants (Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate), tea tree leaf oil and Betaine Salicylate, a BHA derivative. Its slightly acidic pH is close to that of the skin; the tea tree smell comes from the oil itself. It works on its own in the morning and as the second step after the oil in the evening.
| Criterion | Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil | COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser |
|---|---|---|
| Step | first cleanse in the evening (oil-based) | second cleanse in the evening, alone in the morning (water-based) |
| Skin type | all; pores and sebum | all according to the manufacturer; especially oily and combination skin |
| Texture | light oil, emulsifies into a milk | clear gel, lightly foaming |
| Key active | plant oils, heartleaf extract | Betaine Salicylate (BHA derivative), tea tree leaf oil |
| Scent | perfume according to INCI, subtle | no perfume; tea tree smell |
| Size | 200 ml | 150 ml |
Our pick: together, the two make a complete double cleanse. Dry skin uses the oil in the evening and just water in the morning; oily skin uses the gel cleanser morning and evening.
Creams: Anua Heartleaf 70 Intense Calming Cream or COSRX Snail Mucin 92 Moisturizer?
The Anua Heartleaf 70 Intense Calming Cream contains 70% heartleaf extract, ceramides and panthenol. The texture is creamy but not greasy, absorbs quickly and leaves a soft, calm skin feel; according to the manufacturer it is intended for all skin types including sensitive and dry skin and is formulated without fragrance. The COSRX Snail Mucin 92% Face Moisturizer relies on 92% snail secretion filtrate, sodium hyaluronate and betaine in a light, gel-like cream that hydrates without feeling sticky; the INCI list names no perfume. It continues the essence as the final step. For very dry skin or a weakened barrier, the Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream with centella or, on the COSRX side, the Hyaluronic Acid Face Moisturizer with sea buckthorn water and panthenol are the richer alternatives (more on the skin barrier).
| Criterion | Anua Heartleaf 70 Intense Calming Cream | COSRX Snail Mucin 92% Face Moisturizer |
|---|---|---|
| Skin type | all, including sensitive and dry skin (manufacturer) | all (manufacturer); especially normal to combination skin |
| Texture | creamy, not greasy | light, gel-like |
| Key active | 70% heartleaf extract, ceramides, panthenol | 92% snail secretion filtrate, sodium hyaluronate, betaine |
| Scent | fragrance-free (manufacturer) | no perfume (INCI) |
| Size | 50 ml | 100 g |
Which brand suits which skin type?
Our picks as an editorial recommendation, derived from ingredients, textures and use:
Oily and combination skin
COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser morning and evening, Anua Heartleaf 77 Toner, on two to three evenings the Anua BHA 2% Gentle Exfoliating Toner instead of the heartleaf toner, COSRX Snail Mucin 92 Moisturizer as a light gel cream. The Anua Heartleaf 77 Toner Pads with PHA are the milder exfoliating option.
Dry skin
In the evening the Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil, then a mild cleanser; the COSRX Snail Mucin 96 Essence in two layers; to finish, the Anua Heartleaf 70 Intense Calming Cream or the 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream.
Sensitive, redness-prone skin
This is where Anua plays to its strengths: the heartleaf toner, Heartleaf 80 Soothing Ampoule and Heartleaf 70 Cream are designed to work together and are fragrance-free according to the manufacturer. The COSRX snail mucin essence with allantoin and panthenol is usually well tolerated; still, introduce new products one at a time and try them on the jawline first.
Mature skin and glow
COSRX Snail Mucin 96 Essence as a hydrating base, plus the COSRX 15% Niacinamide Face Serum for pores and skin tone; the cream as you prefer. Anua adds the Rice Ceramide 7 Hydrating Barrier Serum with 3% niacinamide and ceramides.
Can I combine Anua and COSRX?
Yes, and that is often the best solution. Both brands avoid strongly irritating additives and work with similar auxiliary ingredients (betaine, panthenol, allantoin, 1,2-hexanediol), so the products layer without problems. A proven mixed routine: in the morning COSRX gel cleanser, Anua heartleaf toner, COSRX snail mucin essence, a light cream and sunscreen; in the evening Anua cleansing oil, COSRX gel cleanser, toner, essence, Anua cream. The order follows the texture, from the most watery to the richest product, as explained in the routine guide. The Routine Builder mixes brands freely anyway, by skin type, need and budget.
What else should you look out for when comparing?
- Scent: Anua toner, creams and ampoule without perfume (INCI or manufacturer information), the cleansing oil with perfume; COSRX uses no perfume in the compared products, and in the gel cleanser the smell comes from tea tree oil.
- Content and size: the Anua toner comes in 250 ml, the COSRX essence in 100 ml; the COSRX cream in 100 g, the Anua cream in 50 ml. For layering, the large bottle is practical.
- Animal-derived ingredients: snail mucin is a filtrate of animal origin. If you want purely plant-based skincare, stick with Anua or with COSRX products without snail secretion, such as the Hyaluronic Acid Face Moisturizer.
- Genuine products: popular products from both brands also turn up as counterfeits on marketplaces. How to recognise originals is shown in the guide Korean cosmetics: how to spot the original.
