Skin cycling is a four-night rhythm for the evening routine: on the first night you exfoliate with an acid, on the second you use a retinoid, and on the third and fourth nights there is only hydration and barrier care. Then the cycle starts again. The idea: actives work better and are better tolerated when the skin has time to recover in between, instead of getting a new stimulus every night. Korean products fit this plan well because the range includes mild acids, low-dose retinoids and many soothing barrier products. Here you will learn how the cycle is structured, which products from our range fill the four nights and how sensitive skin adapts it.
What is behind skin cycling?
The term was coined by New York dermatologist Whitney Bowe, who popularised the plan on social media in 2022. The idea itself is not new: dermatologists have recommended for decades introducing retinoids slowly and not using them on the same evening as an exfoliant. Skin cycling puts this experience into a fixed calendar. The benefit lies less in the effect of individual nights than in its reliability: every evening you know what is due, you do not overdo anything and you can more easily tell what your skin is reacting to.
What does the 4-night plan look like?
| Night | Step | What you use | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exfoliation | Chemical exfoliant with BHA, PHA or AHA after cleansing, then toner and cream | No other actives, no mechanical scrubbing |
| 2 | Retinoid | A pea-sized amount of retinol or retinal on dry skin, then cream | Wait until the skin is dry, avoid the eye area, start with a low dose |
| 3 | Recovery | Hydrating toner, soothing serum, barrier cream | Only hydration and lipids, no acids, no vitamin C |
| 4 | Recovery | As night 3, a sleeping mask if needed | The skin should feel calm before the cycle starts again |
In the morning, the routine is the same on all four days: gentle cleansing, hydration, sunscreen.
Why are the recovery nights so important?
Acids loosen the bonds between dead skin cells and thin out the uppermost layer of the stratum corneum. Retinoids speed up cell renewal and in the first weeks often cause redness, flaking and dryness, known as retinoid dermatitis, which subsides over time. Both together, or one after the other every night, increase water loss through the skin and cause irritation. The American Academy of Dermatology explicitly points out that exfoliating while using a retinoid can increase dryness and breakouts. Two nights with nothing but hydration, ceramides, panthenol and centella give the barrier time to rebuild lipids, so the skin tolerates the next exfoliation evening well. If you skip recovery, you usually get exactly the side effects that gave acids and retinol their reputation.
Which Korean products fill the plan?
Night 1: exfoliation
Korean exfoliants are usually dosed more mildly than Western ones. For oily and combination skin, a BHA toner is a good fit, such as the Anua BHA 2% Gentle Exfoliating Toner with 2% salicylic acid, panthenol and ceramides, fragrance-free according to the manufacturer. For sensitive or dry skin, PHA is the gentler choice, for example the Biodance Skin Refining Mild PHA Toner with 8% gluconolactone, ceramides and hyaluronic acid, or the Medicube Zero Pore Pad Mild with PHA and madecassoside. If you prefer pads, the Celimax Ji Woo Gae Heartleaf BHA Peeling Pad combines Betaine Salicylate with soothing heartleaf. After exfoliating, follow only with toner and cream, no vitamin C, no retinol. How to use exfoliating pads correctly is shown in the guide to toner pads.
Night 2: retinoid
Our range has retinoids in several strengths. To start, a low-dose retinol is a good choice, such as the Dr.Althea 0.1 Gentle Retinol Serum, which combines retinol with bakuchiol, panthenol and birch sap and according to the manufacturer is intended for sensitive skin, or the Anua Retinol Serum with 0.1% retinol and 5% niacinamide. Retinal (retinaldehyde) is one step closer to active retinoic acid in the conversion chain and is considered stronger than retinol: the K-Secret Seoul 1988 Serum contains 2% liposomal retinal and black ginseng and is for skin that already tolerates retinol well. Since November 2025, the EU has set an upper limit of 0.3% retinol equivalent in face products for retinol, retinyl acetate and retinyl palmitate, together with the mandatory warning "Contains Vitamin A. Consider your daily intake before use." Apply a pea-sized amount of the retinoid to dry skin, then cream. For the eye area, bakuchiol is the gentle option, for instance in the Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream.
Nights 3 and 4: recovery
Now only the barrier counts. After cleansing, a hydrating toner, ideally in several layers following the 7 skin method, then a soothing serum such as the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Asiatica Ampoule, whose ingredient list consists only of water, glycerin, butylene glycol, centella extract and three auxiliary ingredients, and finally a cream with ceramides and panthenol, for example the Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream. Very dry skin takes the richer SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Probio-Cica Enrich Cream with ceramides and shea butter. More examples in the guide strengthening the skin barrier with Korean skincare.
How do you adapt skin cycling for sensitive skin?
- Five nights instead of four: exfoliation, retinoid, three recovery nights. Or exfoliation and retinoid only in every second cycle.
- PHA instead of BHA or AHA: the molecules are larger, penetrate more slowly and irritate less.
- Buffer the retinoid: first a thin layer of cream, then the retinol, or mix both in your hand.
- Bakuchiol to start: a plant-based alternative with a similar direction of action, without the typical initial irritation.
- Start short and gentle: retinoid once or twice a week at first, exfoliant only on the T-zone, and after cleansing wait until the skin is completely dry.
- Pause if you experience burning, persistent redness or flaking, and only start again after a week of pure recovery care.
Retinoids are generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding; discuss this with your doctor and in that case use the cycle only with exfoliation and recovery nights.
What belongs in the morning?
Acids and retinoids make the skin more sensitive to light. Sunscreen with SPF 50+ and high UVA protection is therefore the last step in the morning on all four days, for example the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics with SPF 50+ and PA++++ or the light SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air-fit Suncream Light. Which Korean sunscreen suits which skin is shown in the sunscreen comparison. Otherwise, in the morning the skin only needs cleansing with water or a mild cleanser, hydration and cream. Vitamin C is possible, but better left out on exfoliation days.
When will you see results, and when should you pause?
You often notice a smoother skin feel after the first cycle. Finer-looking pores, a more even skin tone and fewer fine lines take eight to twelve weeks, because the stratum corneum renews itself about every four weeks and retinoids only work in deeper layers after several cycles. Signs of too much: persistent redness, flaking, burning when applying toner, a shiny, tight feeling that does not come from hydration. Then do a week of recovery care only, and afterwards start again with longer intervals.
The most common mistakes with skin cycling
- Exfoliant and retinoid on the same night to save time.
- Several acids on top of each other: an exfoliating toner, then exfoliating pads, then an acid serum are three exfoliants.
- Vitamin C, high-dose niacinamide or acids on the recovery nights. These nights are for hydration and lipids only.
- No sunscreen or too little of it.
- Starting straight away with a high retinoid strength. Start with a low dose and only increase after weeks.
- Continuing the cycle during acute irritation instead of pausing.
If you want to put together a routine that suits your skin type and the cycle, the Routine Builder creates a morning and evening routine with three to ten products. Suitable products by step: exfoliation, retinol and barrier care.
