Anyone who looks into Korean skincare soon comes across snail mucin: the COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence has been one of the best-selling K-Beauty products worldwide for years. This guide explains what snail secretion filtrate is, what it does on the skin, how it is collected and who is better off with alternatives.
What is snail mucin?
Snail mucin, declared in the INCI list as Snail Secretion Filtrate, is the filtered secretion of the garden snail (Helix aspersa). The snail produces it to keep its skin moist and protect it from injury. The secretion contains glycoproteins, mucopolysaccharides such as hyaluronic acid, allantoin, glycolic acid and trace elements such as zinc and copper. In Korea it has been used in essences, serums and creams since the 2010s, usually in concentrations between 60 and 96 percent.
What does snail mucin do for the skin?
The cosmetic effect rests on the composition: hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharides bind moisture, allantoin soothes, glycoproteins form a light film that keeps the skin supple. Users describe a plump, smooth, rested skin feel that shows especially on dry, dull or stressed skin. The evidence consists of laboratory studies and smaller user studies; large clinical trials in humans are lacking. Snail mucin is therefore a good hydrator with soothing properties, not a miracle product.
What snail mucin cannot do: remove scars, "repair" wrinkles or treat blemishes. For dark marks after spots, niacinamide and sunscreen help more specifically; for pores, BHA.
How is snail mucin collected?
The manufacturers state that the snails are kept in dark, humid rooms on nets or glass plates and release the secretion at rest; the animals are not injured or killed in the process. This can hardly be verified independently from the outside, and as an animal product snail mucin is not vegan. If that matters to you, there are plant-based alternatives with a similar profile: centella asiatica for soothing, beta-glucan and hyaluronic acid for hydration, plant-based PDRN for a rested complexion.
Which skin is snail mucin suitable for?
- Dry and dehydrated skin: the classic use case, as an essence in two layers under the cream.
- Oily and combination skin: well tolerated because the texture is water-based and not greasy; as the only hydration layer in summer.
- Sensitive skin: usually well tolerated, but introduce it on its own; very rarely, people with a shellfish or mollusc allergy react.
- Mature skin: as a hydration base under peptide or retinol products.
How do you use snail mucin?
The essence comes right after the toner: spread a small amount between your palms and pat into still slightly damp skin. The typical texture is clear and stringy but absorbs within a minute. Then follow serum and cream. In the morning snail mucin goes under sunscreen, in the evening under a richer cream or a sleeping mask. It can be combined with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, centella, acids and retinol.

Example routines with snail mucin
Dry skin, evening
Cleansing balm, creamy cleanser, hyaluronic toner in two layers, snail mucin essence, serum with rice or ginseng, cream with ceramides. For very dry skin, a thin layer of balm on top.
Oily skin, morning
Gel cleanser, heartleaf toner, snail mucin essence as the only hydration layer, light sunscreen. In the evening a niacinamide serum complements the essence; on acid evenings snail mucin comes after the pads as a soothing layer.
Sensitive skin
First test behind the ear for two to three days. Then in the morning centella toner, snail mucin essence, barrier cream, mineral sunscreen; in the evening the same without sunscreen.
Shelf life and storage
Snail mucin essences are water-based and preserved; after opening, the information on the packaging applies (usually 12 months, open-jar symbol). Store cool and dark and do not touch the pump dispenser with your fingers. If smell, colour or consistency changes, stop using the product.
Snail mucin or hyaluronic acid: which is better?
Both hydrate. Hyaluronic acid is a pure humectant, vegan and available across all budgets. Snail mucin additionally brings allantoin and glycoproteins that soothe and give a smoother skin feel. If you want a soothing hydration layer and accept animal-derived ingredients, snail mucin is the choice; if your routine is vegan, hyaluronic acid plus centella. Many routines use both layered.
